Oliver started his seafaring career at 23 years of age in 1948 on the Sonar and then the Radar which were owned by Capt. Keith Tibbetts, Snr of Cayman Brac. He then sailed on a cargo ship the Baretta that transferred lumber, cattle and cargo in general between Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Cabezas Nicaragua, Port of Limon Costa Rica, Honduras and the eastern Caribbean Islands. He also sailed most of the Kirkconnell Ships - the Kirk B, Kirkland, Kirk Chief, Kirk Fam and Kirk Express. In the early 1970's he received his British Chief Engineering certification after his passed the exam in Belize.
