I nominate my father Leighton G. Rankine Senior, because from a young girl growing up I heard many stories of my dad going out to sea and back. I remember clearly seeing a quote that he kept on on of the smaller vessels he was on that read " I am the captain of this ship and I have my wife's permission to say so" That made me feel so proud, even if he wasn't the captain! My father has clear memories such as going into the open seas one time & witnessed a vessel sinking ten miles in front of them in the English channel, & also circling a Norwegian container in distress until a coast guard tug boat arrived to rescue all on board. (My HERO'S). My late Grandmother (R.I.P) Osefa Rankine was always so proud of my dad and other sons who went to sea for all they contributed to our Beloved Islands. My father's positions varied which included but not limited to:
BR (bedroom Stuart)
OS (Ordinary Seaman)
Quarter Master
AB- who gave orders on behalf of the Captain when required.
No matter his position, I'm honored to know he served as a brave Seaman who came back and serves at HMP over 30 years until retirement.
