Bio

Introduction:
I nominate Mr Lawrence "Eddie" Scott due to his extensive experience of 40 years in Seafaring from deck boy to 2nd Officer and then Chief Officer. His seafaring exploits allowed him to travel to virtually every country in the world and to achieve leadership positions unimagined hailing from the small island of Cayman Brac. Eddie was the son of Mae Estella Wilson and Captain Edward Gordon Scott of the Creek, Cayman Brac. In 1932 Eddie's father survived the infamous Hurricane in the Brac, but sadly Captain Edward had suffered some serious injuries and passed away a month later. Eddie carried on his father's love for the sea and his career began shortly after turning 16 years of age in 1941 when he joined the British Royal Navy ship "MV ARAN" as a deck boy. During World War II nearly all seamen faced not only the dangers of the ocean but also the treacherous conditions of war. During this period Eddie recounted that "We usually left port in a convey of 20-30 ships escorted by Navy Destroyers but the German submarines always managed to sink a few ships before we arrived at our destination. During this time I sailed mostly on the S/S CATCHART- a Canadian Flagship operating between the Caribbean, USA and Canada. We were fortunate to survive the German Torpedoes." At the end of World War II in 1945, the S/S CATCHART was sold to the Chinese government and Eddie travelled to Shanghai and spent 2 1/2 months in China prior to his next assignment. In 1946 Eddie was again with a Canadian ship named M/V DEVILLERS as a sailor. On a voyage from Miami to Haiti on the morning of September 24, 1947, a hurricane hit and the ship was destroyed on the rocks of BARACOA, CUBA. All 19 crew members were injured and hospitalized for weeks before being repatriated to their respective countries. Eddie then sailed with Southwell National Bulk Carriers where he spent 20 years from the capacity of Sailor to 2nd Officer. In 1968 he joined the Apollo Shipping Company in New York and was assigned as Chief Officer on the Apollo 2. This ship operated to the Mid-Eastern countries. Eddie in his career spent a couple of years sailing with Captain Ashton Reid and his son "Billy" and also with the Kirk Line operated by Captain Charles Kirkconnell. In the early 70's Eddie shipped out again to the Mid-Eastern countries. Finally, in 1981 he retired from the sea settling in Grand Cayman on December 18th.
