Mr. Laten "Duxie" Gerrimore Ebanks made many turtling trips to the Miskito Cays between the 1920s and the early 1950s. Two of the well-known vessels he made trips on were the Rembro and the Majestic. He and 18 other seamen were spared from the tragic sinking of the Majestic in September 1941 because they took shelter on a cay off Honduras. Shortly after the sinking of the Majestic, Duxie made a trip from Jamaica to Belize in 1942. During his lifetime, Duxie built his own boats from local trees such as the pop nut tree: "Better Than Beholding", "Improved", "Perspire", "Hot" and "The End". His last known trip was in 1952 to the Miskito Cays. Mr. Laten Gerrimore Ebanks is being nominated for an award in the Early Pioneer category.
