As a young boy, Kirby wrote that he wanted to become a member of the NMU which promoted better living conditions for all seaman regardless of color or creed.
Kirby arrived in Tampa Florida on the day that President Roosevelt passed away April 12, 1945. He became an employee of the Swannie Steam Ship Company and joined the NMU. He sailed on many ships in many capacities after that first job, and finally retired to Tampa Nov 30, 1968.
