Joseph Redfund Smith went to sea early in his life sailing on local schooners. In the early part of World War II, around 1939-40 Joseph went to England. He sailed on British merchant ships during the war, mainly in the European region. Returning home after the war in 1945, Mr. Smith immigrated to the USA and continued this seafaring career sailing for National Maritime Union ships worldwide. On one of his voyages returning from India to the US, around 1951, he fell sick at sea. The ship was diverted to Gibraltar where he was hospitalized and soon passed away. He was buried in Gibraltar National Cemetry. Mr. Joseph Redfund Smith and his wife Ruth, had one son, Raul Smith.
