Introduction:
I nominate the above person for the above indicated category because Capt. Jude made significant contributions to the development of these islands from a very early age. Around 1928 when he was still a mere boy, he began his working life as a turtle fisherman on the Miskito Cays. He sailed on vessels such as the Jemson and Cayman Venture for many years, regularly encountering severe weather and dangerous situations. In June 1941 he was amongst the young Caymanian men who enlisted in the Trinidad Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves where he served for several years. After this stint in the Reserves he sailed for many years on the Addie H and the Merco, bringing building supplies and food to the islands from the USA. In those early years in Cayman, Capt. Jude was depended on by many in the West Bay community, especially the mothers, to shop for and bring back orders of clothing and household goods, which he patiently did for years. Although he did not have the professional qualification of Captain, he was unofficially given this title as he captained many of these vessels on their travels in and out of these islands. In March 1956 he joined National Bulk Carriers and sailed all over the world on ships such as the Ore Neptune, Ore Saturn, Ore Mercury, Ore Meridian and the Mispah. He worked with them faithfully until 1966, when he retired shortly after having surgery. However, his love for the sea never faded and he would go boating whenever the opportunity arose. Capt. Jude was often heard saying that he wanted to build these islands up and would never leave to live anywhere else as so many were doing. He stuck to his promise and continued to develop the land of his birth until his passing.
