Bio

Introduction:
John Samuel Hinds, was born November 7, 1923 in South Sound, Grand Cayman to Bradley Joseph and Elizabeth MaryAnn Hinds (n'e Henning) as the eldest of three children (elder brother to Jen Flowers (n'e Hinds) and Rita Johnson (n'e Hinds)). He served in a multitude of seafaring roles, starting as a crew member aboard a number of ships before working his way to First Mate of the NS Savannah, the first nuclear-powered commercial vessel in the United States. He later became one of the few Caymanian captains at the time as captain of the commercial research vessel, the Glomar Challenger. During his time at sea, he crossed a number of famed maritime routes such as the Antarctic Circle. In 1978, on a helicopter flight out of Sabine Pass, Texas to return to the helm of his vessel, the Glomar Java Sea, flight complications resulted in a crash and in his untimely passing at 54 years old, after serving 36 years in the industry. He was survived by his wife, Esther Hinds (n'e Eden) and his only son, Phillip Hinds. For further information, documents, or questions, please contact me at william.s.hinds@gmail.com.
