Bio
Introduction:
I nominate the above-mentioned person, my grandfather, Mr. John Calward Ebanks (known as Calward), for the Memorial Scroll award because of: (1) his instrumental contributions to our Turtling and Seafaring industries, having worked for over thirty-one plus years in them and (2) the loss of his life at sea while serving as a seafarer.
From his early teens, John was heavily involved with turtle ranging, making many trips to Miskito Cays off the coast of Nicaragua like many other young Caymanian men in the pursuit of capturing turtles as it was the main source of livelihood in those days. He later joined the Keystone Shipping Company, and then the National Bulk Carriers. His last voyage at sea was on the ship, the Universe Defiance, where, unfortunately, he met a tragic death on the 15th April 1977, when his ship exploded off the coast of West Africa. At the time, he was 46 years old and was working in the capacity of Fireman Water-Tender.
In light of the foregoing, I am honoured to nominate my grandfather for this award for his invaluable contributions to our maritime heritage.
