I nominate Alvin Mclaughlin for the Pioneer Award for his time, effort and dedication at sea. Alvin left home in November 1967 at the age of 18 to begin his seaman career. He started as a Wiper and the went on Engine Maintenance. At the age of 20, Alvin became the youngest Chief Pumpman with National Bulk Carriers. He trained 18 pumpmen. The men that Alvin trained were from Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, Bahamas, and Holland. Alvin first ship was the SS Ulysses. He the sailed on Ore Mecury, Ore Saturn, Phoenix and Ottawa.
