Alvin Lewin Ebanks - Seafarer
Alvin Lewin Ebanks was born in West Bay Grand Cayman on August 12th 1917 and passed away on July
31st 1999. He attended the Wesleyan(Pilgrim) Holiness Church in West Bay and the old West Bay school
at Boggy Sand Road with the late Teacher Hill.
Upon leaving school, he began his seafaring career, entered the turtling trade and sailed frequently to
the Miskito Coast of the Western Caribbean on vessels such as the Jemson and others as was the tradition.
In the early 1940's he enlisted in the British Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve(RNVR) who were recruiting
Caymanians. His contingent was transferred to the RNVR base in Trinidad for training and active service,
where they patrolled the Caribbean and the Tropical South Western Atlantic in search of enemy
submarines guarding the important oil resources of the British Empire in colonial Trinidad. He served for
four years until the end of World War II, after which he was honourably discharged. Whilst in Trinidad, he
contracted malaria and was hospitalised, and as a gunner, he lost part of his hearing in an accident which
caused him to talk loudly for the rest of his life.
After the war in 1946, he travelled to Tampa Florida, and commenced employment there with the Swanee
Shipping Company. He later became a US Citizen, and sailed on various American flagged ships with
firms such as the Texaco Oil Company, Lykes Lines and others, from various US ports frequently as
Quartermaster.
He retired from the sea in 1968 and worked in the security industry for several years. While retired
in his sixties, he was recruited by Mr Kemuel "Kem" Jackson MBE to sail on the M/V Beacon which was operated
by Mr. Herbert "Herbo" Humphreys Jr's. firm Marine Archeology Recovery and Exploration (Marex). As
a noted and very skilful sport fisherman, he enjoyed sport fishing well into retirement and was sought
after for charter fishing trips by tourists, he met while in the security industry.
