James went to sea from an early age, at the age 12 (see attached document). He sailed with the US merchant marine for some 45 years. With service in the Pacific region during WWII, he sailed as a Quarter Master under the command of the US Army transport service. He and his first cousin, James Prentice Powell, operated JP Powell & Co. merchandising store in West Bay. They also owned and operated the schooner "Banks" (a ship). On 12 September 1935, he married Irene Eugenie Henning, daughter of legendary sea captain. Capt Lorraine Henning. Five children we were born to this union. He sailed the seven oceans of the World during his seafaring career. James was qualified for US War Veterans service posthumously. James Elmslie Banks died on 10 August 1986.
